Key Programmes
Reading for Life@TKPS
The Reading for Life @ TKPS Programme aims to build a strong reading culture to support students' lifelong learning. Reading broadens students' knowledge by empowering them to learn about the world around them. The programme consists of an eclectic variety of engaging events and activities that encourage students to read by exposing them to a wide range of genres.
Reading for Life@TKPS: Library Activities
Students have regular scheduled library visits to provide the, the opportunity to borrow books and participate in the library activities. To encourage student to read widely from various genres, they are given a 'Reading Passport' where they can record the books they have read and written book reviews for. Throughout the year, the School Library has different thematic displays and engaging activities to promote books related to genres, events and celebrations.
Reading for Life@TKPS: Book Sharing Wednesday
Every Wednesday before morning assembly, teachers model the way by sharing books that they have read from the School Library or from MyON (an online reading platform). The book sharing garners students' interest in the featured books and exposes them to a wide range of genres.
Reading for Life@TKPS: Extensive Reading (Moo-O)
Moo-O is an online interactive tool that supports reading fluency and speaking skills. Students immerse themselves in a range of stories as they take on the roles of the characters in the stories that they have read.
Reading for Life@TKPS: Extensive Reading (myON)
myON is a student-centred, personalise online digital library that gives students access to more than 7,000 enhanced digital books. The book titles are dynamically matched to each individual's students interests, grade and reading level. Teachers are also able to assign books and reading activities for students to engage in to develop their reading comprehension skills.
Reading for Life@TKPS: Extensive Reading (Newspaper Subscriptions)
To promote extensive reading in English Language, student subscribe to newspapers for students. P4 and P5 students subscribe to Little Red Dot Newspaper while P6 students subscribe to What's Up Newspaper. These publications covers news that is presented in a way that would appeal to young readers and help them keep abreast of current affairs to gain more knowledge in various areas of interest.
Interdisciplinary Learning Journeys
In collaboration with other departments, Interdisciplinary Learning Journeys
are organised for the following levels and locations:
P1 Singapore Zoo
P2 Singapore Orchid Garden
P3 Changi Studio Experience
Through the Learning Journeys, students broaden their experiences and
build their vocabulary. This will support them in writing of compositions
and conversational skills.
Future Problem Solving Programme
The Future Problem Solving Programme (FPSP) is a dynamic international
programme developed in 1974 by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance.
It comprises several components, both competitive and non-competitive,
which aims to develop creative and critical thinking, problem solving and
decision making skills.
Telok Kurau Primary School participates in the Global Issues Problem Solving
(GIPS) component as a team. Students will learn the six-step creative problem
solving process and use it to respond to a Future Scene provided for each
topic. At Primary 5, an emphasis is placed on developing their research
and analytical skills. Through cooperative learning, students stretch their
imagination to generate innovative solutions to solve the problems of emerging
realities.
